AH Question: Imperator Totius Hispaniae

With a POD between 1210 and 1510, what's the best/most plausible way to have a single monarch on the Iberian peninsula who directly or indirectly controls every country there (possibly excluding Portugal), and is internationall recognized as having this title?

Try having Alfonso X slow down his changes so that the country doesn't turn on him and have his acknowledged heir Ferdinand de la Cerda survive. This should help reduce Castile's troubles that began toward the end of Alfonso X's reign and maybe make them strong enough to unite the greater part of the peninsula centuries before Fernando and Isabel.

The last king recognized as such in the Iberian peninsula was king Alfonso VII of León & Castille in the 12th century.

It could be recognized first as a honorary title and if it would become formally recognized then the imperator totius Hispaniae would probably have to acknowledge that the Holy Roman Emperor as precedes him (even if 'Spain' de facto becomes much stronger and important, it has more to do with 'international order of precedence' among Christian princes). Now having the HRE, the Papacy and other Christian kings recognize this as a honorary title of the kings of 'Spain' will be somewhat easier than a recognition of a formal empire of Spain.

I do agree that an earlier unification would help.

So there is no way to possibly replace the Holy Roman Emperor with one based in Spain who would then use the title described in the name of this thread?
